A short story>
As most of you racers, I had rollers and fancy birds as a kid. In the early eighties I was and had been for several years into bird dogs and hunting. So my introduction to homing pigeons was only for training my pups!
I had no idea there was such a sport as racing them---Well it wasn't long before I was entered in my first race!!!! I flew for a few years--not terribly successful; and got out.
I kept a few around to watch them fly ; just in case I ever decided to get back into racing. In 2000 I met Decie and she loved the birds!! Of course way down deep inside I knew it wouldn't take much to get back into racing, but with all the politics and things had changed so much. I had a good friend that kept telling me things weren't that way any more. So Decie and I decided to try a few races.
Well the politics sure hadn't changed !!!!! But I so far have managed to not let it drive me out, and we do enjoy the birds and the competition.
We have been so lucky !!! I called an old friend , Charlie Jacinth in California; that just happened to be a 17 time Hall of Fame Winner!!! He told me had a team of yearlings that ,due to his health he was not going to fly--- he said if I want em -come and get em!!! So we were off to California>
His love was the Delbar and he crossed them with birds from Vernazza, Chic Brooks , the old lines from Oak Haven Farms and a few other lines. I am going to post a separate page on "Charlie Jacinth" Charlie left us a short time ago and man do I miss him!!!. I use to call him on race day or during the week to talk to him about the races or get some tips on how to get them ready.
A short time after we returned from California; Decie's relative, Norval "Jr. Dennis called and said come and pick out what I wanted from his birds as he was getting out also!! Hapyco and Keizer birds mostly. They fit right in!! So we did!! More great birds!! You see what I mean by LUCKY!!!! I started with birds it took most people years to acquire!!
Between those two guys I have birds that I still haven't bred or tested!!! And they will be here till I do!!!
Then of course I added a few myself frond Ganus and SureBet lines!!
Decie has been a full partner in the sport and I sure wouldn't be able to keep up without her. I'll come home from work some days ,go out to the lofts and see she had been out all day cleaning!! She does all the morning feeding and is there to make sure our birds are cared for and there schedules aren't off.
She really loves the grizzles and whites. As a matter of fact all of them were given to her from Charlie and Jr.
[I'm so lucky that she lets me breed from them!!!!!] I remember always telling her that "white birds can't fly " A favorite saying between her, Jr. and Charlie when he was still alive and "87" was scoring every week!
We promised Charlie that we would keep his birds flying and that will be our goal as much as winning is.
